Our journey began with a single vision. Learn the story of the dedicated individuals who brought this organization to life.
The Founders
Founder, President
I've always had a deep love for music, having played piano for over ten years, and I've witnessed how it can truly lift people's spirits. For me, music is a vehicle to create meaningful moments and help others feel alive and engaged. I am also a member and contributor to the Gerontological Society of America and the American Society on Aging!
Vice President
I've been playing piano since I was four years old, and music has always been an integral part of my life. Over the years, I've come to appreciate its ability to inspire, heal, and connect people. To me, playing piano is about creating emotions, telling stories, and bringing a sense of joy and presence to those who listen.
Vice President
Music has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. After playing piano for 11 years and violin for 10, I've realized music is more than just an art. Whether through the rich harmonies of the piano or the expressive melodies of the violin, I love using music to create moments of connection, inspiration, and joy.
The Origin
Gemma Wang conceptualized The Melody Project by combining her lifelong passion for piano with a deep desire to give back to her community. Spending summer 2024 developing a detailed plan, she connected with Karen Young at the Sweet Readers nonprofit — and was asked to develop a specialized musical program for nursing home residents with Alzheimer's disease.
That spark grew into something much bigger. Recognizing the need for a dedicated team, Gemma recruited two fellow musicians in autumn 2024 — and The Melody Project was officially born.
Our Journey
Gemma Wang begins developing a detailed plan to bring musical programming to isolated seniors. She connects with Sweet Readers nonprofit and is invited to create a specialized curriculum for nursing home residents with Alzheimer's.
Gemma recruits fellow Chapin School musicians Suman Shah and Evelyn Zhang — both described as possessing "amazing musical skills and true empathy." The founding trio is complete.
The Melody Project launches its first sessions at partner senior facilities across New York City, including Inspīr Senior Living, The Bristal, Sunrise Senior Living, and The New Jewish Home.
The organization is featured in WIT Magazine, the American Society on Aging's Generations Now, and presents at the Gerontological Society of America's Annual Scientific Meeting. The Melody Project reaches 200+ older adults and 75+ students.
The Melody Project opens its chapter program, inviting students across the country to bring music-based intergenerational programming to their own communities.
